Acts of mercy?

I’m sure at least some of you have heard about the recent Dr. Phil show  that, apparently, stated it is merciful to kill your disabled child. I’ve been hearing this type of thing a lot lately. It’s one thing to just read about this type of thing in the headlines, but it is something entirely different when it seems most people in our culture agree with it. You know who else had this view? Hitler. I’m sorry, is it extreme for me to say that? Regardless, it is true. He would have mentally handicapped kids taken from hospitals to be killed. Hitler also was able to convince most of the public that disabled folks didn’t deserve to live OR he was able to convince people to turn a blind eye at what was happening.

I am sure that some  people do believe this is an act of mercy; however, behind this supposed compassionate face of killing off the weak is eugenics and it’s nothing new. Eugenics has been alive and well in America for sometime … it never really went away. Now days it certainly does seem to be making a resurgence though, with little to no opposition.

It goes without saying that we live in such a dark society. I don’t think electing Republicans or keeping “under God” in our Pledge of Allegiance will do anything to save our culture. I pray that Christians would stop putting their hope in such things! The only thing that can change what’s going on in America is the Gospel. God alone can change hearts! With most churches today not even preaching from the Bible — not even about God or the Gospel but instead self-esteem/self-help, feel good “messages” — it’s no wonder our society is so dark. The church is supposed to be a light in darkness.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matt. 5:13-16

As Christians we need to be praying for God to bless our nation … with conviction and repentance. Nothing else will do! Our culture needs to be grieved by her sins and seek the face of God. Let prayers for prosperity, protection, and other blessings cease until we (as a country) are brought to our knees, begging God to show us a true act of mercy — granting us the forgiveness we in no way deserve and turning our hearts to Him.

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” -John 8:12

  1. I hadn’t heard of the Dr. Phil show that stated that! That’s absolutely ridiculous! What a very sad nation/world we are becoming. Only the Gospel will help lead us back to where we belong – into the arms of Christ.

  2. Great post Hollie. It is AMAZING how blind people are to the similarities in the argument for abortion and the Nazi propaganda. Eugenics certainly was an intent behind the beginning of the abortion industry, further soiled by the filth of racism. Blah… makes me sick.

And I completely agree that our country needs the gospel. We need the church to be the church. We need to actually take upon us the social causes of righteousness and charity that are meant to differentiate us from the rest of the world. We need to live out our faith in a way that displays Christ. Definitely praying for this.

    • You are right, the similarities between abortion arguments and Nazi propaganda are so similar! I did want to point out that on the Dr. Phil show they weren’t discussing abortion but just killing disabled children in general. The link I posted even talks about how a father killed his daughter with cerebral palsy by leaving her in in his truck cab in the garage with the truck running. And he has no guilt about this and knows she is at peace now. That is just heart-breaking. Of course, embracing abortion leads to this kind of mindset.

  3. I am saddened, but not shocked, that this was on TV and that so many people agreed with it. I agree that, while it’s important to elect the best candidates into office, that’s not going to save our country from where it’s headed. Only the change in the hearts of our citizens will do that, which can only come from the Lord.
