Weekend Links 12/10/11

Weekend reading! A little dash of seasonal apologetics, along with more of the names of Jesus, some mothering pieces, and a video that brought me to tears (pregnancy hormones? 😉 ) :

And I just had to share this video. Says Justin Taylor, “This ten-year-old boy, Christopher Duffley, was born premature, blind, and autistic. His parents adopted him at fifteen months of age. God has given him the gift of music:”

HT: Justin Taylor.

  1. Interesting post on White’s blog. Though I’m sure his guest poster’s intention in citing Schaff’s work is to discredit papal infallibility, I can’t see one instance on his list of quotations which qualifies as being said in ex cathedra. For example, a sermon, even by a pope, is not an exercise in ex cathedra and is therefore not seen as infallible teaching. When speaking outside the realm of ex cathedra, a pope is just as capable of misspeaking as any other leader in the faith. It is interesting to see the dissenting viewpoints, however. I’m inspired to take a closer look at the development of Marian doctrine over time. I do know that Pope Pius IX defined ex cathedra the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. Have any popes denied it since then?

Loved this video! I saw that on a friend’s Facebook earlier this week.

    • Yes, you are correct it was not official dogma until 1854, a very reccent development really. I don’t believe a Pope is allowed to deny what another Pope has said ex cathedra, are they? As such, I can’t imagine any have spoken out against it. I’m not sure they were trying to discredit Papal authority because this was posted during a time James White was preparing for a debate with a Roman Catholic on the Marian doctrine. I think the point the AOMIN blog was trying to make was that the commonly promoted idea that the church or Christians has always believed this isn’t so, as these Popes’ teachings are showing.

Yes, the video is just precious! It’s so neat how God gives us all special gifts to glorify Him with 🙂

  2. Thanks for sharing this, Hollie. I just watched the video and am sitting here crying like a baby! Like, sobbing. Amazing.
